What is a Boom Guide Bushing
Boom Guide Bushings are cylindrical parts, which are installed at the articulated/telescopic slide of the telescopic boom, usually they are produced by forging + CNC machining with alloy steel materials, playing important roles, such as wear resistance, positioning and limiting anti-sway during sliding.

Materials of Guide Bushings for Construction Machinery Boom

Three commonly used materials: 45#, 40Cr, and 42CrMo.
- 45# (C1045/1.0503): 45# carbon steel is an economy forging material for boom guide bushings, it is cost friendly for light-load construction machinery and small boom
- 40Cr (5140/1.7035): preferred for medium and small load equipment
- 42CrMo (4140/1.7225): high performance for bad working conditions, e.g. high load, impact, and mining, it has best wear-resistance than above two materials.
Why Inner Hole Need to be Hardened?
Inner hole is sliding surface, it requires great wear resistance. Wear resistance relies on the surface hardness, the higher hardness of surface, the better wear resistance.
Hardened by induction quenching, inner hole surface hardness can be improved from HRC25 to HRC48~56 with excellent wear resistance, preventing it from being worn out rapidly during frequent sliding.

Depth of Hardened Layer for Boom Guide Bushing

It should be known that the hardening is not for all the boom guide bushing body, quenching just forms a certain depth to create a hardened layer, core of the bushing will not be hardened, still with good toughness.
After induction quenching, the guide bushing for construction machinery boom has better external surface hardness to enhance wear resistance + soft internal core to ensure toughness, can effectively avoid rapid worn or frequently break during sliding.
Different materials have different hardness and induction quenching layer depth, below list is the common hardening requirements for boom guide bushings:
