In Terms of Process:
- Resin Sand Casting:
This method involves creating sand molds with sand, resin, and a curing agent before pouring molten iron to form the shape.
It is the mainstream process for cast iron pump bearing housing. Castings produced this way feature a smooth surface, high dimensional accuracy, a dense structure, and few defects, with stable mold forming capability that suits batch production of medium-sized castings.
The main limitation is that its cost is slightly higher than that of water glass sand.
- Water Glass Sand Casting:
Sand molds are prepared with sand and water glass binder, followed by molten iron pouring.
The advantage of this process lies in its low raw material cost, making it ideal for ordinary water pump bearing housings; its drawbacks include a relatively rough surface, excessive burrs, large machining allowances, and poor dimensional accuracy.
- Lost Foam Casting:
There are two approaches. One involves cutting foam into the desired shape, coating it, embedding it in a sand box, and vaporizing the foam with molten iron.
This is suitable for single-piece or small-batch production and requires no additional metal mold. The other approach involves first creating a metal mold, then injecting foam to obtain a foam pattern, and finally pouring molten metal. This method suits mass production, offering low cost, short lead time, and the ability to produce complex parts.
Both lost foam processes provide high precision, producing one-piece castings free of parting lines and with minimal burrs and a smooth surface-well suited for high-end pump parts. However, this process is prone to carbon buildup when making thick-walled castings, and is therefore not recommended for thick-walled cast iron pump bearing housings.
Being more costly than resin sand casting, it is better reserved for high-end, irregularly shaped, and customized products.
In Terms of Material:
Gray Cast Iron (Common Grades: HT200 / HT250):
Bearing housings made from gray cast iron offer excellent vibration absorption and low noise.
Coupled with its low cost and favorable castability, it suits mass production of standard pump bearing housings.
However, the material is relatively brittle, with poor resistance to heavy impact, making it applicable mainly to conventional small and medium-sized pumps.
Ductile Iron (Common Grade: QT500-7):
Carbon exists in the form of spherical graphite, giving this material higher strength and toughness than gray cast iron, along with superior vibration and impact resistance.
Bearing housings made from ductile iron deliver longer service life. Nevertheless, the higher cost makes it suitable for harsh working conditions and heavy-duty pumps.

For pumps handling ordinary fluids at normal temperatures and light-to-medium loads, with minimal vibration and regular working intensity, gray cast iron bearing housings can be selected.
For conditions involving heavy loads, sewage, chemicals, high pressure, and strong vibration and impact, the ductile iron version is more suitable.
Selecting Processes by Quality Requirements
When tight structure, smooth surface, high dimensional accuracy, and minimal casting defects like sand holes are desired, the resin sand casting process is recommended.
If low cost, high efficiency, and cost-effectiveness are prioritized, and a somewhat rougher surface with average precision is acceptable, water glass sand casting is an alternative.
For high-precision, complex-shaped parts free of parting burrs, and for high-end heavy-duty pumps, the lost foam process becomes the appropriate choice.
Selecting Structural Types by Maintenance Needs
The integral bearing housing is cast as a single piece, offering strong rigidity, good sealing, and steady operation.
It is well-suited to small and medium-sized water pumps that operate continuously over long periods without frequent disassembly.
The split bearing housing, with its two-part structure, is easy to assemble and disassemble, making inspections and bearing replacement more convenient, and is commonly used in large and medium-sized industrial pumps and heavy-duty equipment.
