High Manganese Steel Castings

High Manganese Steel Castings
Details:
High manganese steel castings, also known as Hadfield steel castings, are steel components with high manganese content (≥10%) produced by casting processes. Before 1882, there was no ideal steel material for application in high wear and impact conditions. Though people have found that higher manganese content in carbon steel can improve its hardness, if the content is more than 3%, steel will become extremely brittle and hard, and easy to break.

Working Environment Media Dry dust, low-temperature flue gas, neutral weak corrosive slurry, magnetic mineral mixture
Environment Limitation Not suitable for strong acid long-term immersion

Core Key Advantages

  • Outstanding Work-Hardening Performance: Original hardness is around 200HBW; under continuous impact and friction, surface hardness quickly rises above 500HBW, while the internal matrix remains high toughness to avoid fracture.
  • Superb Impact & Abrasion Resistance: Single-phase austenite structure prevents brittle cracking under heavy shock, ideal for severe wear & impact working conditions.
  • Non-Magnetic Property: Suitable for equipment operating in magnetic interference environments.
  • Custom Alloy Optimization: We add Cr, Mo, Ni, W elements to upgrade anti-wear, anti-crack and high-temperature performance based on client working conditions.

Our Heat Treatment Technology

High manganese steel castings must be heat treated to improve their performance before use.
We do precise and smart temp control heat treatment-water quenching for all of our high Mn steel castings. Its main procedure is:

  • Heat to 1050–1100℃
  • Hold temperature 2-4 hours
  • Rapid water quenching to get single-phase supersaturated austenite structure, which is the base of high work hardening and toughness.

Common Cracking Causes & Preventive Solutions

Below is the list of reasons may cause cracks on high manganese steel castings, according to our long-term manufacturing experience.

Cause Category

Causes

Prevention Measures

Structural Design

Large wall thickness change

Control thickness difference less than 3mm, add big enough fillets (internal R≥5mm, external R≥3mm)

Casting

Excessively high or low casting temperature

Precisely control casting temperature with correct range

Wrong pouring speed

Adjust pouring speed

Unexperienced design of casting gate and risers

Optimize mold design, using side risers instead of top riser

Wrong operation of gate and riser cutting

Using easy cutting riser; using saw cutting instead of flame cutting

Heat Treatment

Fast temperature change, large temperature difference between castings and furnace

Preheating 1-1.5 hour below 650℃, then rise the temperature.

Slower heating: ≤30-40℃/h when temperature ≤650℃; ≤50-60℃/h when temperature >650℃

Rapidly immerse castings into water
