About Gray Iron & Ductile Iron Drive Wheel Castings

A drive wheel is a heavy-duty, cast metal component that provides driving force in mechanical equipment, powering the entire machine into operation.

By material, drive wheels are generally categorized into gray iron drive wheels and ductile iron drive wheels.

The working principle of gray iron and ductile iron drive wheel castings is as follows: the drive wheel is mounted on a transmission shaft and rotated by a power source, thereby driving chains or conveyor belts.

Typically disc-shaped, they feature a central bore for shaft installation, while the outer rim may be toothed, smooth, or grooved depending on the application.

These castings primarily serve to transmit power, match chains and tracks, bear heavy loads from materials and equipment, and ensure long-term, stable operation with resistance to wear and deformation.

With years of expertise in the casting industry, Shata Machinery specializes in manufacturing gray iron and ductile iron drive wheel castings.

Proficient in three core processes-green sand casting, resin sand casting, and lost foam casting-the company effectively resolves common casting defects such as porosity in drive wheels.

By adhering to rigorous production standards, Shata Machinery produces drive wheels that are dense, wear-resistant, and impact-resistant, with strong adaptability, delivering high-quality custom cast drive wheel components for a wide range of machinery.

Selection Guide for Gray Iron & Ductile Iron Drive Wheel Castings

By Material Grade

HT200 Gray Iron Drive Wheel: Moderate hardness, good castability, and favorable wear and vibration resistance. The material is brittle, making it unsuitable for heavy loads or severe impacts. Ideal for light-duty, constant-speed applications in ordinary conveyors, small agricultural machinery, and light transmission equipment.

HT250 Gray Iron Drive Wheel: Compared with HT200, it offers higher hardness and superior wear resistance with a denser, more stable structure. Still inherently brittle with poor impact resistance, it is suitable for medium-load, continuous-operation construction machinery and standard conveying equipment.

QT350-22L Ductile Iron Drive Wheel: Features high toughness, ductility, and fracture resistance, though hardness is lower. Its excellent flexibility makes it well-suited for low-temperature environments and frequent start-stop conditions.

QT450-10 Ductile Iron Drive Wheel: Offers the most balanced combination of strength, toughness, and wear resistance, making it the most common and versatile ductile iron grade in the market. Widely used in mining, construction, and heavy-duty conveying equipment.

QT500-7 Ductile Iron Drive Wheel: Compared with QT450-10, it provides higher strength and hardness with slightly lower toughness. Suitable for heavy-duty mining equipment, large construction machinery, and high-load, long-duration heavy-duty applications.

Comparison Aspect Green Sand Casting Resin Sand Casting Lost Foam Casting
Surface Finish Rough surface, frequent defects, heavy post-processing, average appearance Smooth surface, high dimensional accuracy, few defects, minimal machining allowance, good overall appearance Best surface finish; no parting lines, burrs, or flash; minimal machining required
Suitable Size & Complexity Small to medium-sized, simple structures; complex teeth/profiles difficult to form Covers all sizes; ideal for large heavy-duty wheels; standard and moderately complex structures can be produced Excels at complex structures, deep teeth, special holes, and custom designs; also suitable for simple wheels
Production Volume Optimized for high-volume mass production of standard parts Suitable for medium-to-high volume and mid-to-high-end orders, balancing quality and capacity Suitable for small-to-medium volume and custom complex parts; uneconomical for mass production
Lead Time & Cost Shortest lead time, fastest delivery; lowest material cost, highest cost-effectiveness Moderate lead time (slower than green sand); moderate cost (higher than green sand, lower than lost foam) Longest lead time due to foam pattern fabrication; highest overall production cost
Production Process for Gray Iron & Ductile Iron Drive Wheel Castings

Casting Stage: Molds are prepared according to customer drawings, with green sand, resin sand, or lost foam processes selected for molding and pouring. Gray iron formulations emphasize fluidity and vibration dampening, while ductile iron focuses on spheroidization to ensure toughness and strength.

Cleaning and Heat Treatment: After demolding, castings undergo sand cleaning, gate removal, and shot blasting to eliminate surface residues. Stress-relief annealing or normalizing is applied as needed to relieve casting stress and stabilize both structure and dimensions.

Machining and Inspection: Critical features such as bores, keyways, and outer diameters are precision-turned, with tooth machining performed on toothed drive wheels per drawing specifications. Each piece is inspected for hardness, dimensions, and appearance before being cleared for packaging.

Surface Treatment and Packaging: Anti-rust oil coating or primer painting is available upon request. Castings are packed in reinforced wooden crates or on pallets to prevent damage during long-distance transport.
