What is a Rotary Kiln Tyre

 

Rotary kiln tyre, also called riding ring or rolling ring, is a load bearing component of rotary kiln.
Unlike car tyre that are made of rubber, kiln tyre is a large ring-shaped cast/forged steel part.
Kiln tyre is installed on the outside of the kiln shell/drum, supports whole huge weight of kiln and ensures smooth rotation through the support rollers.

Kiln Tyre Migration: Causes, Effects and Solutions

 

1. What is Kiln Tyre Migration
Kiln tyre migration (also called riding ring slip/axial shift is a fault phenomenon about the abnormal relative displacement between kiln tyre and kiln shell (kiln drum/body).
There are mainly two forms of kiln tyre migration:
Axial migration: tyre sways along the length direction of the kiln shell, is the most frequent type of kiln tyre migration
Circumferential slip: shell rotate faster than tyre(normally tyre should rotate synchronously with shell), causes circumferential sliding, commonly known as "rolling ring slip".


2. Effects of Kiln Tyre Migration
Kiln tyre migration will cause serious consequences:
Abnormal Component Wear: Tyre migration will accelerate the wear and peeling of contact surfaces of tyre and support roller, shorten their lifespan, and increase replacement cost
Kiln Shell Deformation & Cracking: Unbalanced stress causes elliptical deformation and weld cracking, may even cause shutdown maintenance
Increased Equipment Vibration: Unnormal vibration causes wear of bearing, gear and reducer, accompanied with noise
Sealing Failure: the sealing parts at the kiln head and kiln end are misaligned and worn, causing problems such as air leakage, material leakage and ash leakage, affecting production efficiency
Shutdown Risk: serious migration will result in stuck of equipment, overload and trip, forcing production to be interrupted and loss of production capacity
Safety Risk: serious accidents may be caused by the detachment of tyre and shell breakage, threatening the safety of on-site operation and maintenance personnel.


3. Solutions to Kiln Tyre Migration
Emergency Treatment:
Adjust angle of support rollers: to deal with axial migration, change the inclination angle to balance axial thrust and reset kiln tyre; avoid large-scale change to prevent unbalanced stress
Lubricate timely: replenish high temperature resistant grease, clean dust on contact surface, to restore normal friction
Stabilize operation parameter: Keep rotating speed and feeding stable, reduce temperature fluctuation to relieve shell deformation
Check thrust device: repair or replace worn thrust rollers, lock limit parts to restrict axial displacement
 

Redical Repair

 

  • Calibrate Equipment Axis: Shut down to detect kiln foundation and support roller bracket, repair settlement, and re-calibrate parallelism between shell and rollers
  • Repair worn surfaces: welding and turning on worn areas of tyre and rollers
  • Adjust backing plate clearance: refine or replace backing plates to control fit clearance accurately based on thermal expansion coefficient
  • Replace aging parts: replace severely deformed or cracked tyre / shell in time to eliminate hidden dangers

 

Long-Term Prevention

 

  • Regular inspection: monitor tyre displacement, temperature and vibration for early warning
  • Standard lubrication management: inject high-temperature grease regularly and quantitatively to maintain good lubrication
  • Stable production conditions: avoid overload and frequently startup/shutdown, control uniform kiln temperature
  • Annual equipment calibration: inspect roller angle, shell axis and clearance, and adjust timely
