Materials for Headstock Castings

Gray Cast Iron
Gray cast iron is the most commonly used material for machine tool castings, e.g. headstock castings, it's weight proportion is 70%~90%.
This is mainly because of the excellent vibration absorption of flake graphite from interior of gray cast iron. The flake graphite works as sponges, they absorb vibration by compression and deformation, turning vibration into heat energy. It more likes sitting on a soft sponge couch.
If no flake graphite, cast iron will lost vibration-absorbing medium, just like we remove all sponge of couch and sitting directly on wooden plates, feel hard and uncomfortable.

Ductile Cast Iron
For heavy-duty, high-speed and large-load machine tools, gray cast iron has obvious shortcomings:
S1: Weak strength and impact toughness - make it prone to cracking or even splitting
S2: Insufficient fatigue resistance - Long-term heavy-load operation is prone to plastic deformation, which affects the accuracy of the machine tool
Therefore, for casting components of above machine tools, ductile cast iron with better strength and impact toughness should be used instead.
The flake structure of graphite in gray iron makes material very easy to separate and break at the contact surface between graphite and iron structure.
However, ductile iron graphite is a ball-shape. It likes sand gravel, unevenly and steadily embedded in the cement, helps ductile iron withstand long-term alternating loads, effectively prevent the crack or deformation of the castings.
